The Professional/Personal Or Public/Private Balance

Anil Dash: “being too aware of one's audience is a problem, it seems like, as in music, all creative people get stifled by being aware of the people who are watching them. It is possible, though, to step back and refocus on the parts that are most exciting. Hopefully we can all remember how to do that.”

I used to write at length almost daily about my personal life, but after a couple of years, I started realizing how pointless it was. Most of the really juicy stuff has been deleted from public view—some people think of the ability to delete stuff from the Internet as a bug, but I'm starting to see it as a feature—but it's slowly being re-released. Anil talks about the struggle to find “the professional/personal or public/private balance” and I imagine that's something that normally happens as a weblog increases in popularity. Privacy by obscurity only lasts so long.

(For what Anil means by "inside-baseball", see Jay Rosen's explanation of the term.)
