Allegedly Of The New Generation

February 22nd, 2004

Makiko Itoh, responding partly to this: “The few Japanese guys that I did go out with and/or thought about going out with all had some fairly traditional ideas about how a girlfriend or spouse should be though. Not that it was never stated in obvious terms, e.g. "Hi, I'm thinking of dating you, but are you going to make me give up my job if we get married?" It was more in the little things that were said or reacted to - like finding it strange that I knew more about computers than they did, or being surprised that I didn't enjoy clothes shopping. Or even just sitting back and expecting me to get them a coffee. I don't mind getting coffee for anyone, and from my ojisan Japanese bosses I expected that attitude. it's just a bit weird when it comes from guys my age and even younger who are allegedly of the new generation.”

She links to a multicoloured rant on the subject, amounting to "who the fuck cares as long as you're in love with the person". That's my attitude. (That's been my attitude since a year or so ago: it took longer than expected for me to get to that point.) An Asian female friend once emailed me asking why I hadn't responded to her writing about her newfound interest in white guys, and I told her that I read it but didn't think it needed responding to. So she liked white guys. And so skin colour or other physical attributes are a factor in whether a girl likes someone. Like that's news to anybody.
