Calling Them Red-Hair

Adrianna: “Here, we call expats angmohs instead of gweilos - calling them red-hair is politer than white devil, if you ask me - but The Angmoh Diaries definitely sounds less appealing than The Gweilo Diaries. Ditto for Just An Angmoh instead of Just A Gwailo.”

Agreed. My weblog's name rolls off the tongue a little bit better, as does Conrad's. (Despite appearing at this address, or perhaps the old GeoCities one, this site was called, very briefly, Just a Gaijin. That was my "I'm tired of my weblog's original name" phase, which I got over.) I still get emails from Cantonese-speakers who think my site's name is funny, having an original name with a story behind it is a pretty good way to get attention when it appears on a sidebar list of weblogs. Until recently got emails saying I had gotten it wrong in my 'why' page when I suggested that gwai lo was a racist term. I changed it to merely impolite, as, I'm assured, there are terms that Cantonese-speakers use that are intended to be offensive.
